Report debunks myths touted by first-wave cybersecurity tools; highlights what business leaders should know about current threat landscape

[SAN FRANCISCO, CA] — April 16, 2024 — Fletch, a cyber threat intelligence platform that specializes in alert prioritization and threat forecasting, has just released a report debunking common misconceptions about the threat landscape. These findings are based on the ongoing trends reported by the Fletch AI engine which continuously crawls and indexes the threat landscape.

The report, titled “2024 Fletch Report: The Top Trends of the Threat Landscape” highlights how traditional cybersecurity processes are ill equipped to combat the current threat landscape – ultimately putting organizations at risk and compromising businesses' ability to protect consumer data. This is largely due to the nature of how quickly the threat landscape evolves.

Among the key findings of the report is the prevalent misconception around what percentage of threats are actively exploited in the threat landscape, which stands at just 13%. These are the threats that could affect each consumer. The actual number of threats that will target a consumer is much lower based on different factors such as industry, tech, geo, etc.

Consequently, when consumers are alerted by traditional tools that their data has been compromised, there is no context behind those alerts. Majority of those alerts are not relevant or actively exploited at that time. And there’s no way of telling which alerts are most pressing without spending hours doing research. As a result, depending on traditional security tools can end up not only increasing their workload, but leaving them vulnerable while providing a false sense of security.

Other aspects highlighted in the report include the trends surrounding threat lifecycles and threat targeting. This is fully highlighted in deep dives into specific threats that rocked the cybersecurity world in 2023 including a look at the adaptiveness of the reemerged Lazarus threat and the MoveIt vulnerability which impacted over 77 million individuals.

On the release of the report, CEO and Founder of Fletch, Grant Wernick said, “Threats are not all created equal; it's not apples to apples for every threat that's out there. Consumers need to know how the threat landscape actually operates. It’s incredibly dynamic. We got to get people out of the dark.”

The 2024 Fletch Report covers the following:

  • Current trends across the cybersecurity threat landscape
  • The lifecycle of threats
  • The adaptability of the Lazarus Threat evolution
  • Top threats targeting industries
  • Top targeted technologies
  • The MoveIt Vulnerability case study
  • The future of cybersecurity and what should matter most to business leaders
